Trong tiếng Anh, có bốn loại từ chính là danh từ (nouns), tính từ (adjectives), động từ (verbs) và trạng từ (adverbs). Bài viết sẽ hướng dẫn cách để nhận biết các loại từ trên thông qua tiền tố hoặc hậu tố của một từ.

Danh từ (Noun)

Các hậu tố xác định loại từ là danh từ:

  • -tion: information, reaction, education, condition, inspiration,…
  • -sion: decision, revision, invasion, confusion, dimension, conclusion, television,…
  • -ment: development, improvement, assessment, investment, comment, entertainment,…
  • -ce: finance, silence, office, license, audience, confidence, peace, difference,…
  • -ness: happiness, sadness, brightness, darkness, madness, deafness, friendliness,…
  • -y: library, society, university, company, energy, security, secretary, majority, memory,…
  • -er/or (động từ + “er/or” trở thành danh từ chỉ người): father, mother, doctor, professor, player, philosopher,…

Động từ (Verb)

Các tiền tố xác định loại từ là động từ:

  • en-: enforce, engage, enjoy, enrich, enact,…

Các hậu tố xác định loại từ là động từ:

  • -ate: activate, evaluate, debate, appreciate, translate, communicate, calculate,…
  • -en: flatten, blacken, harden, frighten, threaten, widen, happen,…
  • -fy: simplify, verify, amplify, identify, horrify, liquify, satisfy, ratify, certify, qualify,…
  • -ize/-ise: maximize (maximise), minimize (minimise), customize (customise), modernize (modernise), economize (economise), realize (realise),…

Tính từ (Adjective)

Các hậu tố xác định loại từ là tính từ:

  • -ful: wonderful, careful, successful, peaceful, plentiful, helpful, stressful,…
  • -ive: impressive, attractive, legislative, aggressive, native,…
  • -able: memorable, lovable, available, forgivable, imaginable, comfortable,…
  • -ous: dangerous, serious, famous, mysterious, obvious, ambitious, mountainous, poisonous,…
  • -cult: difficult,…
  • -ish: sluggish, childish, selfish, foolish, stylish, smallish, longish, tallish…
  • -ed: exhausted, excited, bored, interested, determined, disappointed, confused, relaxed,…
  • -y (Danh từ + “y” trở thành tính từ): achy, daily, airy, yearly, friendly, healthy,…
  • -al: international, technical, cultural, political, practical, personal,…
  • -ial: potential, racial, facial, social, financial,…

Trạng từ (Adverb)

Trạng từ thường có cấu trúc là adj+ly.

Ví dụ:

  • wonderful + ly: wonderfully
  • careful + ly: carefully
  • successful + ly: successfully
  • peaceful + ly: peacefully
  • ambitious + ly: ambitiously
  • dangerous + ly: dangerously

Tuy nhiên, sẽ có những ngoại lệ như sau:

+ Có hậu tố -ly nhưng lại là tính từ: quarterly, yearly, monthly, weekly, daily, friendly, lively, lonely, lovely, costly…

+ Không có hậu tố -ly nhưng lại là trạng từ: first, anywhere, along, fast, late, early, hard, near,…
